Federal lawmakers from the South-West have celebrated Afenifere leader Reuben Fasoranti on the occasion of his 100th birthday, describing him as a fearless defender of Yoruba interests and a leading voice for true federalism in Nigeria.
The lawmakers say many of the elder statesman’s long-standing dreams for a fair, just, and equitable federation are gradually becoming reality through ongoing constitutional reforms and regional development efforts.
The tribute is conveyed by Chairman, National Assembly South-West Caucus and Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele, in a statement released on Sunday through his Directorate of Media and Public Affairs.
Bamidele described Pa Fasoranti as one of the last surviving disciples of late nationalist leader, Obafemi Awolowo, noting that he remains a strong symbol of integrity, courage and selfless leadership.
He praised the elder statesman for his role in Nigeria’s democratic struggle, recalling how he stood firmly against military dictatorship and consistently advocated for the return to civilian rule, which culminated in the birth of the Fourth Republic in 1999.
The Senate Leader said Pa Fasoranti has continued to offer guidance to leaders across the country while championing calls for an equitable governance structure that reflects the interests of all Nigerians.
According to him, the National Assembly is already pursuing reforms aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s federal system, including moves to establish state police and devolve more powers to sub-national governments.
Bamidele also pointed to the establishment of regional development commissions as part of efforts to bridge infrastructure gaps and drive development across the geo-political zones.
He expressed optimism that several reforms long advocated by the Afenifere leader would become reality during his lifetime, reaffirming the commitment of lawmakers to building a more peaceful, prosperous, and united Nigeria.
