The FreeSowore group has freed 16 inmates in the Nigeria Correctional Service Medium Security Custodial Centre, Keffi, with the sum of one million Naira.
The group said that the one million Naira was the alleged bribe received from the Department of State Security, DSS, to stop the group’s protest on the release of the co-convener of the Revolutionnow movement, Omoyele Sowore.
The group had last month revealed to the media that the said amount was given to persuade the community of human rights group to suspend the demand of Sowore’s freedom from the DSS custody, but promised to use it to serve humanity instead.
The 16 prisoners, who were empowered with different skill acquisition during their stay, promised to desist from any form of criminal activities to avoid spending another jail term in the custodial centre.
Before the release of the 16 inmates, 402 inmates were serving jail terms at the correctional centre while 292 are waiting trials and three are expected to remain in custody for life.
