The National Association of Nigerian Students’ (NANS), has commended the suspension of the trial of Omoyele Sowore, the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, AAC, by the Department of State Services, DSS.
Addressing journalists in Akure, the Ondo State capital on Monday, the leadership of the students’ association led by its President, Babatunde Akinteye, described the decision by the Director-General of the DSS, Oluwatosin Adeola Ajayi, to suspend the prosecution as commendable.
Akinteye said the development was a positive signal that the forthcoming general elections would be free, fair and credible.
He said suspending the prosecution to allow Sowore pursue his political ambition of becoming President would provide a level playing field for all candidates participating in the election.
The NANS President described the decision as a demonstration of the DSS’s commitment to democracy, fairness, due process, the rule of law and the integrity of the electoral process.
The students’ body also commended the DSS for its role in the fight against terrorism and insurgency in the country.
