The Supreme Court of Nigeria has affirmed the election of Umo Eno of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, as Governor of Akwa Ibom State, upholding the March 18 ,2023 Governorship election result.
The Justice Uwani Abba-Aji led seven -man panel of Supreme Court justices dismissed appeals by Senator Bassey Akpan of the Young Progressives Party, YPP, Akanimo Udofia of the All Progressives Congress APC, and Senator John Udoedehe of the New Nigeria People Party, NNPP, who were candidates in the election.
The appellants had challenged the election of Governor Eno on the grounds that he was not qualified to stand for election having filed a forged Secondary School certificate , a matter that had already been decided in favour of Governor Eno by the Supreme Court in a pre election matter between Eno and an aspirant ,Akan Okon .
