Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, has joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), three months after resigning from the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Lawal made the announcement in Abuja, saying his decision was influenced by concerns over the worsening security, economic and social conditions in Nigeria and the need to play a role in shaping the country’s future ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The former SGF said he had previously considered withdrawing from partisan politics but reconsidered after reflecting on the state of the country and the prospects of younger Nigerians.
Lawal also threw his weight behind the NDC’s presidential ticket of former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi and former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
He said the records of Obi and Kwankwaso in Anambra and Kano states provided a basis for believing that their approach to governance could be replicated at the national level.
Lawal’s move marks another political realignment by the former SGF, who resigned from the ADC in June following disagreements over the party’s presidential primary.
He had previously been associated with efforts to build the ADC ahead of the 2027 elections.
Receiving Lawal into the party, NDC National Leader Seriake Dickson described him as an experienced political organiser and mobiliser.
Dickson said the party expected the former SGF to contribute to its political and campaign efforts, particularly across the North-East and North-Central regions.
Lawal’s defection adds to the growing movement of politicians between opposition parties as preparations intensify for the 2027 general elections.
