President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to delivering safe, durable, and sustainable infrastructure across the country, emphasizing that public safety must remain the foundation of engineering practice and regulation in Nigeria.

The President gave the assurance in a keynote address delivered on his behalf by the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, at the opening of the 34th Engineering Assembly of the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) in Abuja.

The President, represented by the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, said effective engineering regulation remains critical to safeguarding lives and property, stressing that public safety must be at the heart of engineering practice and infrastructure development.

The call comes amid growing concerns over infrastructure failures and the activities of unregistered engineering practitioners.

President of COREN, Professor Sadiq Abubakar, said weak enforcement of engineering regulations, inadequate funding, a shortage of qualified personnel, and the absence of domesticated engineering standards continue to undermine the profession.

He added that emerging technologies, cybersecurity threats, climate-related risks, and increasingly complex infrastructure require stronger regulatory oversight to protect lives, property, and the environment.

Stakeholders at the Assembly are expected to propose measures to strengthen engineering regulation, improve compliance, and reinforce public safety standards in infrastructure development nationwide.
