The Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, in Zamfara State has been enmeshed in crisis, with two factional chairmen emerging from its 2024 election of state officers.
The immediate past Vice Chairman of the Association, Dr. Ibrahim Jibril Hano, was declared by the returning officer, Dr. Mannir Bature, as the winner of the election for the chairmanship position, having polled 183 votes to defeat his closest rival, Dr. Usman Suleiman Mayanchi, who scored 12 votes, but is now claiming to be the new chairman.
The Zamfara State branch of NMA, started its Annual General Meeting peacefully, with a scientific conference, but when the election of the new state officials commenced, pandemonium set in.
The returning officer for the election was the National Publicity Secretary and former State Chairman of the Association, Dr. Mannir Bature, who adjourned the session to 5pm, where the delegates were to participate in the exercise virtually.
According to him, they reconvened at 5pm, when the election was conducted. Candidates for other positions emerged unopposed, but three candidates, namely Ibrahim Jibril Hano, Mohammed Abubakar and Usman Suleiman contested the chairmanship position.

Dr. Ibrahim Jibril Hano who the NMA National Publicity Secretary described as the legitimate and recognised new State Chairman by the National Body promised an open door policy, transparent, and accountable leadership, as well as to carry every member along, as he has their mandate to lead the Association in the state.
Dr. Usman Suleiman Mayanchi who is also claiming to be the new State Chairman is receiving the support of some elders of the Association. He is calling on the members to support him and his team to succeed in taking the Association to greater heights.
One of the elders, who believes Dr. Mayanchi is the rightly elected Chairman of the Association, was the pioneer Chairman of the NMA in the state, Dr. Hassan Mamman. He offered fatherly advice on ways to reposition the medical profession.
AIT.live investigation revealed that Dr Ibrahim Jibril Hano’s camp has been recognised by the National Leadership, and added to its platform as the state officers in Zamfara State.
It also gathered that on Sunday, August 11, Dr. Mayanchi had gone to the State Secretariat, claiming he was the new Chairman, but he was denied access, and the other camp planned to take action against him.
