Police have rescued a US-based medical doctor from a mob attack in Ibadan after a false kidnapping alarm nearly cost him his life.
The incident happened Monday afternoon around the 2nd Powerline Area of Ologuneru, when officers from Eleyele Police Station responded to a distress call and pulled the victim from an angry crowd.
The victim Dr. Afolabi, and the two girls found in his vehicle, Deborah and Rebecca, were legally in his custody.
Their guardian confirmed they were sent to assist his mother with household chores.
The misunderstanding started at the Polytechnic gate when security stopped the vehicle and saw the girls appearing half-naked.
A language barrier and his attempt to leave the area heightened suspicion, leading the crowd to chase and attack him and set his car ablaze.
Dr. Afolabi is now receiving treatment for his injuries. Police have condemned the act of jungle justice and launched a manhunt for those involved.
The Oyo Police Command is urging residents to avoid mob action and report suspicious cases to the authorities instead of spreading unverified claims online.
