The United States has condemned hostilities and retaliatory attacks that have targeted civilians in Ethiopia’s troubled Tigray region.
In a statement, the U.S. said the escalating fighting will undermine ongoing efforts to deliver humanitarian relief to famine-affected populations there.
The U.S. wants the Tigrayan Defence Forces, the Amhara regional forces, and Ethiopian National Defence Forces to move towards negotiating a ceasefire in the interests of civilians in the region and the unity of the Ethiopian state.
Washington further called on all armed actors to comply with their international humanitarian legal obligations, especially regarding the protection of civilians, adding that individuals and groups responsible for violations of international humanitarian laws and human rights abuses must be held accountable.
