A three-day workshop on Intellectual Property for Growth in Africa has ended in Lagos, with stakeholders calling for stronger IP protection to unlock investment, create jobs and expand economic opportunities in Nigeria’s music industry.

Convened by the U.S. Consuler General in Lagos, the United States Patent and Trademark Office, WIPO and Nigerian alumni of the American Music Mentorship Program, the workshop brought together music professionals, legal and policy experts and emerging creatives to examine how effective intellectual property systems can protect creative assets and increase their commercial value.

At the close of the three-day workshop on Intellectual Property for Growth in Africa, the U.S. Consulate General in Lagos said stronger IP protection can help Nigerian creators retain more value from their work and attract investment.

Bukky Akomolafe, AMMP Alumni said participants gained practical knowledge on ownership, contracts, negotiations and building income through IP.

Participants described the workshop as impactful, saying it strengthened their understanding of music business, IP protection and the importance of clear contracts and legal guidance from the creative process.

The organisers say the workshop is the beginning of deeper U.S.-Nigeria collaboration to strengthen Nigeria’s creative economy through intellectual property protection, investment and partnerships.
