Nigeria has taken charge of the United Nations General Assembly’s Fifth Committee, just as the Administrative and Budgetary Committee opened its main session on Monday at UN Headquarters in New York.
The Committee, chaired by Nigeria’s Permanent Representative, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, will run from October 5th to December
It will begin with what he described as a demanding negotiating period to scrutinise spending proposals, administrative arrangements, and resources needed to implement UN mandates, including the 2027 programme plan and budget.
For Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, it will not be business as usual.
The committee is expected to come up with reforms that will engender accountability and transparency while noting complaints by the United States and Mexico in the UN staff emoluments.
During the deliberations, Member States reiterated the need to scrutinize budget proposals and their implications for programme delivery while pursuing greater efficiency without undermining the United Nations’ capacity to discharge its responsibilities.
They stressed that the development pillar and the priorities of developing countries must receive due attention and adequate resources to ensure the effective implementation of agreed mandates.
The Fifth Committee is responsible for the administrative and budgetary affairs of the United Nations, making its deliberations central to the financing and effective functioning of the organization.
