Students of the University of Abuja in Nigeria’s capital are ubhappy over news of downtool by the academic staff union of the university, ASUU.

The lecturers are accusing the vice chancellor, Professor
Abdulrasheed Na’allah of violating laid down regulations in the appointment of his successor.

There is already a counter move by the Vice- Chancellor to resist the strike as he claims there is no strike by the lecturers.

Our correspondent who was on the campus Friday morning saw Students doting the surroundings of the University of Abuja main library complex, skeptical if their scheduled examination will hold.

The University of Abuja branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities announced the start of an indefinite strike from Thursday, May 2, over what it calls “unhealthy development”

Members of the UniAbuja ASUU have been at loggerheads with the outgoing Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abdulrasheed Na’allah and the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman over the processe for the appointment of a new Vice-Chancellor

An advertorial that surfaced in a national daily on March 15, 2024, sought a replacement for Na’Allah.

When AIT contacted the Chairman, UniAbuja ASUU, Sylvanus Ugoh, he said the Universities Miscellaneous Provision Act 1993 as amended; 2003 and 2012 (Section 3, subsections 1 and 2) empowers only the governing council to advertise the VC’s seat when declared vacant.

He argued that no other organ or individual is legally vested with the power to initiate the procedure of appointing a successive VC.

The university Senate remains silent on the matter, but a group known as the Anti-ASUU strike Forum, Disagrees with ASUU

At the moment, no Nigerian federal university has a governing board, which leaves an un-answered question whether the visitor, who is rhe president, Bola Tinubu, will intervene through his minister of Education, Professor Tahir Mamman.

The Minister has already been receiving knocks from ASUU for taking side with the Uniabuja V.C
