The united nations children’s Fund UNICEF and the federal Ministry of Youth Development have called for a more inclusive and market driven youth employment strategy that will equip young Nigerians with relevant skills and decent jobs
They stated this during the Southern Zonal Consultative Meeting on the review and update of the Nigeria Youth Employment Action Plan in Port Harcourt.
The two day consultative programme by the United Nations Children’s Fund UNICEF, in collaboration with the federal Ministry of youths development, brought together government officials, stakeholders, and young people from the southwest, south east, and south geopolitical zones
The initiative is aimed at reviewing existing youth employment strategies and developing practical responses to emerging labour market trends and the changing nature of work
Representatives from UNICEF and the Federal Ministry of Youth Development said the exercise provided an opportunity to assess progress, identify gaps, and develop sustainable strategies capable of improving employment outcomes for young Nigerians.
While urging state governments to take ownership of the youths employment agenda, they identified other areas the youths can venture into to be self-employed, which include creative economy, technology and digital services, agriculture and agro processing, and maritime activities, among others.
