The need to support qualified women with the capacity to head academic institutions in Nigeria has been advocated as Professor Florence Banku Obi was announced as the first female Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calabar, 45 years after its establishment.
Pro- Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Nkechi Nwogu said this Friday, in Calabar while annoucing the result of the keenly contested position, explaining that the process of the selection was transparent.

She explained that the Council used the guidelines set up by the Federal Ministry of Education on the conduct of interview for the appointment of a Vice Chancellor.
On her part, the in-coming Vice Chancellor, Professor Obi assured the institution of better days ahead based on her experience.
Thirteen contestants vied for the position before Obi who was a former Deputy Vice Chancellor Academic emerged in a keenly contested process.
