The National Commission For Persons with Disabilities is pleased to update the general public on the progress regarding Khalifa Aminu, a 19-year-old SS3 student, whose innovative glasses aim to aid visually impaired individuals in navigating without the use of a cane.
The National Commission For Persons with Disabilities, under the exemplary leadership of Dr. James David Lalu, PhD, NPOM, promptly reached out to Khalifa and committed to facilitating an assessment of his groundbreaking invention.
We are honored to announce that Khalifa and his guardian will be joining the Commission in Abuja to particpate in the Commemoration of the 1st ever International Day for Assistive Technology. During this visit Khalifa and other AT innovators will interface with the Commission and demonstrate their inventions.
This significant event underscores the Commission’s dedication to accelerating access to assistive technology.
Dr. James David Lalu’s 8-point Inclusive Transformation Agenda prioritizes the advancement of assistive technology, reflecting a deep commitment to improving the lives of the visually impaired community in Nigeria. Under Dr. Lalu’s leadership, the National Commission For Persons with Disabilities is transforming the landscape of assistive technology for persons with disabilities , ensuring its afforabilty and availability while turning it into a vital resource for the nation.
Furthermore Dr. Lalu has pledged never to let such talents go to waste and has assured that Government is ready to invest in the local production of assistive devices.
Throught the Accelerating Access to Assistive Technology Program (3ATP) of the NCPWD, the Commission is set to support local manufacturers, inventors and innovators to realise their full potential.
Due to the industrial action by the NLC, which has affected domestic flights, Khalifa Aminu and his guardian were unable to board their flight from Kano to Abuja. Consequently, their visit has been postponed. A new date will be communicated to the public in due course.
