The United States government has announced the designation of six Nigerians over what she described as an “elaborate online scheme to steal”.
The secretary of state Mike Pompeo announced this via his verified Twitter handle, that US govt has arrested six Nigerian nationals over online scam.
“Today, the United States designated six Nigerian nationals for conducting an elaborate online scheme to steal more than $6 million from victims across the United States.”
Speaking further he said that the US government will do all within her powers to protect American businesses and individuals from cyber-attacks.
“We will defend American businesses and individuals from malicious cyber activities.”
Washington state officials had earlier acknowledged the loss of “hundreds of millions of dollars” to an international fraud scheme that hammered the state’s unemployment insurance system and could mean longer delays for thousands of jobless American workers still waiting for legitimate benefits.
Washington state commissioner of Employment Security Department (ESD) Suzi LeVine, disclosed the staggering losses during a news conference last Thursday. Though LeVine declined to specify the exact amount of money that was stolen during the scam, which is believed to be orchestrated from Nigeria. But she conceded that the amount was above the $1.6 million that the ESD reported losing to fraudsters in April.
Recall that earlier last week, popular Nigerian Instagram celebrity Raymond Igbalodely a.k.a Hushpuppi and his friend Mr woodbery were arrested by a combined team of FBI and Interpol in Dubai over allegations of unemployment benefit related scam in the US.
