The World Health Organization (W.H.O) has said moves by the Trump administration to exit the United States from the global health body will signifacantly impact its work.

In a statement released from Geneva, the WHO headquarters, it urged the U.S government to reconsider its decision, expressing a willingness to engage in dialogue to preserve the long-standing partnership established since 1948..

On Monday, President Donald Trump signed an Executive Order for the U.S to exit the global body as part of decisions he took on the first day of returning to the White House.

If the Executive Order is implemented, it will be the second time that the U.S will be exiting the W.H.O.

Towards the end of his first term, Tump pulled the U.S out of the World Health body citing what he called uninspiring leadership due to handling of the COVID-19 pandemic ,which he continually accuses China of spreading.

The WHO statement adds that intention by the new U.S administration to withdraw comes amid ongoing reforms by the WHO, described as the “largest set of reforms in its history,” aimed at enhancing accountability, cost-effectiveness, and country-level impact.

The U.S. contributes about 14 percent of the annual funding for WHO.
