As the world marks the 2020 International Widows’ Day, widows in Akure, the Ondo state capital south-west Nigeria have called on government at all levels and well-meaning Nigerians to help address their plights.
Those who spoke in Akure, said that most of them are suffering from social stigmatisation and economic deprivation due to the loss of their partners.
The devastating effects they say are magnified by a long-term struggle for basic needs, human rights and dignity.
Our correspondent reports that there are an estimated 258 million widows around the world and nearly one tenth, of them live in extreme poverty.

They, therefore, appeal to those who are husband today, to make provision for their wives and children in case of any eventuality.
The International Widows Day celebrated every 23rd of June, was set aside by the United Nations to address poverty and injustice, facing millions of widows and their dependents around the world.
