Rivers state governor Nyesom Wike says Nigeria must urgently find the courage and the means to address the problem of declining quality of graduates for the nation’s universities to be internationally reckoned with as serious citadels of learning, creativity, and innovation.
Speaking at the 36th convocation and 40th anniversary of the Rivers State University, governor Wike says a university is one, only when it is known and appreciated for generating profound ideas, making new discoveries through sound research, and expanding the boundaries of human knowledge.
Five thousand, eight hundred and forty-six graduates were awarded first degrees, post graduate diplomas, masters and doctorate degrees in different academic fields.
While expressing satisfaction with the rapid expansion in educational infrastructure and academic programmes and its positive impact on access to tertiary education, the visitor to the rivers state university and Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike says there’s still no good stories about the quality of graduates from universities across the country.
The governor says the curriculum must, in particular, address the issues of skills, linkages to industries, and relevant competence for job creation, and employability or self-employment.
