The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has slammed a 10-year-ban on Hollywood star Will Smith for slapping comedian Chris Rock at the Oscars.
The Academy announced its decision on Friday after concluding review hearings on the incident.
Smith’s violent reaction followed a joke made by Rock about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett’s shaved head. Jada suffers from a medical condition known as alopecia, which is characterized by hair loss.
Smith later apologised for his actions and announced his resignation from the Academy, a move seen as a preemptive step against a likely suspensions or expulsion.

That did not stop the Board of Governors from taking its decision after concluding investigative hearings on the incident.
A statement by the Academy read, “The Board has decided to ban will Smith for a period of 10 years from April 8, 2022,
Mr. Smith shall not be permitted to attend any Academy events or programs, in person or virtually, including but not limited to the Academy Awards”.
