Destruction of houses by windstorm in Niger State

Niger State Emergency Management Agency, NSEMA says no fewer than 1,000 houses have been destroyed by windstorm in about six local government areas of the state as the rainy season sets in.

This is also because the State Emergency Management Agency has commenced a rapid assessment following a devastating windstorm disaster that affected several communities across Mokwa, Bida, and some other Local Government Areas of the State.

In a statement by the NSEMA Director-General, Abdullahi Baba Arah through the spokesperson of the agency, Hussaini Ibrahim, the preliminary reports indicated that over 1,000 houses were destroyed and severely damaged in the Mokwa local government.

Baba Arah gave the worst-affected communities to include, Sawmill, Kpege Wayata, Kpege, Station Girigi, Efu Shaba Lile, Tifin Madza, Yafu, Etisheshi, Hakimi Aliyu and Nasfat areas.

Similarly, in the Bida local government area, the affected wards include Cheniyan, Nasarafu, Bariki, Kyari, Dokoza, Masaga A and Masaga B.

In another development, windstorm incidents were also earlier recorded in Lavun, Katcha, Gbako and Mariga Local Government Areas, where over 100 houses were reportedly destroyed in the Durgu community under Bobi Ward of Mariga LGA.

NSEMA Director-General added that to mitigate the impact, they are collaborating with relevant stakeholders and local government authorities who are currently conducting detailed assessments to determine the full extent of damages and humanitarian needs of the affected victims.
