Workers on the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project in Cross River State, South-South Nigeria have protested alleged pay cuts, poor working conditions and unfair treatment.
The workers, employed at Hitech Construction Company’s Section 3B site in Awi, Akamkpa Local Government Area, are also demanding the removal of the project manager and intervention by the Federal Ministry of Works.
The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway is a major federal road project planned to run for about 700 kilometres along Nigeria’s coastline, linking Lagos with Calabar and passing through several states, including Cross River State.
Construction began in 2024, with different sections awarded to contractors. Hitech Construction Company is handling Section 3B in Cross River State.
But workers at the site say the project’s promise of better connectivity has been overshadowed by concerns over wages, working hours and treatment by management.
They say reduced working hours and overtime have affected their earnings, while some workers alleged that they were denied adequate welfare and intimidated when they complained.

The workers gathered outside the construction site to demand changes in management and improved working conditions.
Hitech Construction Project Manager, Boutros Dibs who spoke via telephone, assured that the management of the company will meet soon in order to address the issues raised by the workers.
