As Nigeria joins the rest of the world to mark World Cancer Day, Nigerians have been advised to go for early testing and regular checks in order to reduce the increasing rate of cancer cases.
Medical Doctors at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, UPTH, in an interview with ait.live said lack of testing and healthy lifestyles is the bane of cancer, hence the need for regular exercise.
According to the World Health Organisation, WHO, cancer is the second leading cause of death globally and was responsible for an estimated death of 9.6 million in 2018 globally.
It is also estimated that about one in every six deaths is due to cancer, and approximately 70 per cent of death that occurred in low and middle income countries.
As a result of this, medical doctors have advocated the need for Nigerians to always go for screening and medical check-up so as to reduce the prevalence in cases of death of cancer patients across the country.
While explaining the significance of World Cancer Day, medical experts also want Nigerians to maintain a healthy lifestyle by engaging in exercises, eat balance diets among others.
They also suggested the role government at all levels needs to play in reducing the stress cancer patients go through across the country.
