Eye care professionals in Lagos are urging Nigerians to undergo regular eye examinations to detect vision problems early and prevent avoidable blindness.
The call came during activities marking the 2026 World Sight Day, as members of the Nigerian Optometric Association took their awareness campaign to Ikeja, Alimosho, Lagos Island and Festac.
The World Health Organisation estimates that at least 2.2 billion people worldwide live with near or distance vision impairment.
In Nigeria, the figure cited by eye care professionals is approximately 4.25 million.
Concerned about the number of people living with visual impairment, members of the Nigerian Optometric Association took to the streets of Lagos to encourage regular eye examinations and early treatment.
They stressed that many cases of visual impairment can be prevented or treated when detected early.
Beyond the awareness campaign, residents also benefited from free eye screening and treatment as part of activities marking World Sight Day.
Observed annually on the second Thursday of October, World Sight Day draws attention to the importance of eye health and access to quality eye care.
The 2026 campaign reinforces the need for regular screening and early intervention to reduce avoidable vision loss.
