Better protection for migrant workers as ILO, Atumnet push for stronger MRCs

African leaders must end Afrophobia and Xenophobia to help the world’s youngest continent to grow its economy and governance

This was the concensus at the opening of a three-day regional workshop on strengthening coordination and peer exchange on Migrant Resource Centres organised by the African Regional Organisation of the International Trade Union Confederation, ITUC-Africa in partnership with the ILO in Abuja

From Hakima a kenyan based in south Africa, Paddy a migrant worker in Denmark to Omar a kenyan migrant in Qatar, the stories are the same; the push for more integrated Africa and how to ensure workers migrating and returning have access to up-to-date information at migrant resource centres, MRCs, established either by the Governments or trade unions

With the growing number of Africans migrating across borders in search of greener pastures, the African Trade Union Migration Network, ATUMNET and the International Labour Organization, ILO have called for the strengthening of Migrant Resource Centres ,MRCs to improve access to information, fair recruitment guidance, counselling for pre-depature, repatriation and protection services for migrant workers and their families

For the Director of the Employment and Wages Department at Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, Joseph Akpan, represented by Kabiru Muhammed, Migrant Resource Centres remain critical institutional platforms for promoting safe and regular migration across Africa.

The workshop brought together migration stakeholders from across Africa, including migrant workers, trade unions, government representatives and labour migration experts to discuss ways of strengthening coordination among Migrant Resource Centres and addressing gaps affecting service delivery and worker protection.
