Nine lawmakers in the Ondo State House of Assembly have faulted the impeachment of the Deputy Speaker, Iroju Ogundeji, describing it as illegal.

Rising from a late-night meeting in Akure, the state capital, the lawmakers, who are loyal to the state Deputy Governor, said Iroju remains the Deputy Speaker.

The lawmakers led by the former Majority Leader, Suleiman Maito, described the impeachment as unlawful as it did not meet the required constitutional requirement for the impeachment of the Deputy Speaker.

In the last four months, the Ondo State House of Assembly has been embroiled with crisis fueled by the botched plan to impeach the State Deputy Governor, Agboola Ajayi, over his defection from the All Progressives Congress, APC.

Recall that the crisis in the state House of Assembly led to the suspension of four lawmakers who allegedly worked against the impeachment process, but their suspension was declared illegal by the state High Court and Appeal Court.
