NJC suspends court activities in Nigeria over Coronavirus

The National Judicial Council, NJC, has suspended the activities of the Nigerian judiciary for an initial period of two weeks pending further information on the Coronavirus pandemic situation in the country.

A statement issued on Monday by Chairman of the Council and Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Tanko Mohammad, said in view of the reality of the Coronavirus in the country and in other to take further preventive measures only matters that are of urgency or time-bound according to extant laws will be handled by the courts.

The Nigerian Bar Association, NBA had earlier recommended the immediate shutdown of the courts activities in cities with large densities such as Abuja, Lagos, Port Harcourt, Kano and others pending further directives from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC.

NBA President, Paul Usoro in his statement said it has become necessary having noticed the speed at which the disease has been spreading across the country.
