National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA

The Nigeria Emergency Management Agency, NEMA has announced suspension of the evacuation of Nigerians stranded in conflict-hit Sudan. This comes after the seventh batch of 147 Nigerians was airlifted from Port Sudan to Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja by Taco Aviation on Saturday, May 13.

Briefing journalists in Abuja, the nation’s capital to give an update on the process, NEMA Director-General, Mustapha Habeeb said the remaining 167 persons claiming on social media to be stranded Nigerians in Port Sudan must present necessary information and documents of their citizenship as Nigerians to be airlifted.

Habeeb explained that the Federal Government did not ask any of the returnees to make payment for the evacuation, unlike other countries where the citizens foot the bills of their traveling expenses to their various destinations.

The Director-General noted that in three weeks, 15 flights had airlifted 2,518 returnees with 23 of them medically confirmed to be sick while 10 others were treated within the Airport hospital
Including an eight-day-old baby treated for jaundice.

The last airlift which is the 15th flight brings the total number of Nigerians evacuated from conflict-hit Sudan to 2,518 in the exercise carried out by the Federal Government with relevant key players.
