As Nigeria’s Jonah Ubanmhen weighs labour reform, Digital Broadcast emerges as test case

Nigeria Institutional Reformer, Jonah Ubanmhen, says “a pushed for transition to a digital economy where innovation is at the service of people and the common good can set standards in the labour structure and for workers across the nation”. Jonah acquaints that by leveraging on digital broadcast to foster public good, the Nation can actualize a significant progress in attaining the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).

Jonah recognized that though digital broadcast is not a new idea, but is now more relevant than ever considering the development challenges and opportunities the world faces over the coming decades.

In his words:” Today, the world of work is at crossroads, with the need to promote a model of an entrepreneurial state that innovates and places technological transformation at the service of workers and to keep pace with the growth of the working population. What is more, the quality of jobs will need to be improved in order to enable women and men to lift themselves out of poverty”. He encourages that digital broadcast is a public good for economic liberation and protection of workers socio, economic and political rights.

Jonah insists on the need for technology to be at the service of people, resulting in common good and the promotion of labour policies that promote decent work and equal opportunities for people without neglecting the prevention of occupational hazards.

To this effect, he called for a new orientation of technological development to provide solutions to the most pressing social and economical issues of our time, from the unemployment problem to high energy cost and challenges of public health.

After years of economic stagnation, the institutional reformer hopes to shift Nigeria away from an employment system that prioritises stability to focus on growth.

 He stressed further that though the directive will be as ambitious as possible it will guarantee transparency in work-related transaction and contracts to aligns with Sustainable Development Goals.

The reformer, expressed his enthusiasm about his proposed directive saying, “The new initiative marks an exciting step forward in our continued efforts to scale-up our investments in education and uplifts Nigeria’s workforce. It will serve as a new model for generating practical and effective skills and data that will inspire other countries.” He further admitted the necessity for a new generation of support and social protection policies for the people.

Echoing this confidence, he added “importantly, the SDG Goals reflects the commitment to fostering multi-stakeholders’ collaboration and an all-government approach to boost decent work and employment for her citizens in a digital economy.”

Furthermore, he promised to deliver the Digital Broadcast test that will make workers get the legal protection and benefits they rightly deserve.

 Jonah and his Team are working with the ILO and other Development partners to establish Organizational Standard called the Digital Broadcast Test for media owners, employees, and workers

The Digital Broadcast Test prioritizes key action areas by supporting job creation and entrepreneur opportunities in the digital economy as well as improving digital skills among men and women and enhancing the delivery of optimum public and private employment services to the public.

For the start, the directive with the aim of promoting digital skills and stimulate demand for digital services among micro, small and medium enterprises, seeks to introduce new digital interventions in the labour market to create new jobs and strengthen existing programs.

Jonah also expressed his support for the SDGs by stating the resolve of his team to upscale its collaboration with ILO and other partners to make Nigeria achieve the SDGs. “By telling stories and making news content in digital format, the media have a critical role in public enlightenment and helping make Nigeria and the World a much more progressively prosperous and peaceful. This is also part of our broader objectives of promoting inclusive growth, and socio-economic integration of women and youths.”

He said further that as a nation, investing in growth areas such as digital infrastructure and creative use of information technology, the Digital Broadcast Test symbolizes a significant commitment to Nigeria’s structural transformation and a transition towards digital economy.”

“For these and other reasons, Jonah recognizes the role of ILO as drivers of sustainable development and remains a strong supporter of the U.N agency model. In his words “We look forward to continue working with the agency and other partners in advancing labour conditions and decent work a reality for all peoples”.
