The Nigerian Senate

The Nigerian Senate has condemned all forms of violence against women and girls, emphasizing the need for more robust measures to safeguard their interests.

This is as it mandated the Committee on Women Affairs and other relevant Committees to put up a National Road map as highlighted in the Orange Nigeria Initiative.

The resolution of the Upper Chamber follows a motion by Senator Ireti Kingibe on the need for Senators to actively participate in the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence on Women and the Girl-Child.

Senators were all adorned in Orange sashes as a symbol of solidarity for the advocacy, including the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio.

Senators Adams Oshiomhole, Natasha Akpoti and Abdul Ningi, acknowledged the virtues and sacrifices made by women globally, with specific emphasis on those in Nigeria.

The Senate urged the Nigerian Police Force to strengthen the prosecution process of perpetrators of gender violence to pave way for their conviction.

This is as it also urged the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) to undertake continuous review of the existing polices and laws on Gender Based Violence (GBV) in order to accommodate best practices of GBV strategies in tackling this scourge.

The Lawmakers thereafter observed a minute silence in honor of all women and individuals who lost their lives due to violence.
