Former Director General of the Labour Party Presidential Campaign Organization in the 2023 general election, Doyin Okupe has resigned his membership from the party.

Former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi was the Labour Party presidential candidate and came third position in the election won by President Ahmed Bola Tinubu of the ruling All Progressive Congress, APC..

In the resignation letter as seen in his verified social media handle on Monday, Okupe said he resigned his membership from the Labour Party solely on ideological grounds, and that he has neither grouse or guile against anyone either within the leadership or membership of the party.

He said the party was only used as a “special purpose vehicle” to actualise the presidential ambition of Peter Obi during the 2023 presidential election.

Okupe in December 2022 was accused of illegally receiving money from a former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, from the funds meant for arms procurement, and convicted by the Federal High Court in Abuja after being prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC for money laundering to the tune of N700m.

Okupe a day after his conviction for money laundering, announced his withdrawal from the campaign of Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, while promising his support and loyalty to the party’s candidate, Peter Obi.

The Labour Party however claimed unaware of his resignation

The Chief spokesperson of the National chairman of the Labour Party, Yunusa Tanko and the National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh said the national leadership is yet to receive the resignation letter from Doyin Okupe.
