Workers in Plateau State have issued a 74-hour ultimatum to the government to implement the already signed minimum wage agreement or face indefinite strike action.

This was disclosed by the State Chairman of the Joint Public Service Negotiating Council, James Diwa, in the company of other labour leaders, while briefing journalists, after an emergency meeting of the National joint Negotiation Council at the NLC Secretariat in Jos.

Since the turn of the year 2020, civil servants in Plateau State have had high hopes that the much talked about 30, 000 Naira minimum wage would be laid to rest following assurances by the State government, but for the Covid-19 pandemic.

The labour leaders said they reached an agreement with the government after the lockdown but government instead went ahead to implement a salary structure different from the one signed.

While issuing a 74-hour ultimatum for the implementation of the signed agreement, labour also accused the government of outsmarting them.

With the threat of indefinite strike action by both the state and local government workers, it remains to be seen how the governor popularly called “governor alert” would respond to this at a time many other sectors are embarking on strike.
