Former Sierra Leonian President, Bai Koroma has arrived in Nigeria for touted medical care after deal was reached with the West Africa sub-regional body, ECOWAS even as he faces trial for treason charges.

Koroma flew out of Freetown to Abuja, the Nigerian capital on Friday afternoon after being granted permission by the High Court on Wednesday for a maximum three months to attend to his health

Couched as a humanitarian move, it is seen in some other quarters as a political solution to the quagmire resulting from the violence last November that killed 19 persons including 13 soldiers after a jail break and attack on an armoury.

The deadly incident with paralysed activities in Freetown, the Sierra Leonian capital was tagged an attempt to overthrow the President Julius Bio administration which had won a controversial second term following disputed presidential election last August.

Koroma was charged for being part of the attempted coup, but he denies any involvement, and called it a political witch hunt.

The terms of Koroma’s release from house arrest and departure to Nigeria, stipulates that he will return to Sierra Leone when his trial resumes in March.
