As part of its oversight functions, the House of Representatives Committee on Environment has paid a visit to the National Biosafety Management Agency with a view to ensuring effective modern biotechnology regulations in Nigeria.
Chairman of the Committee , Pondi Gbabojor who led the delegation said the visit was also aimed at fostering collaboration between regulatory bodies and legislators to serve the needs of constituents and the nation at large .
Led by its Chairman , Pondi Gbabojor, this familiarisation visit created opportunity for the committee members to gain insight into the agency’s operations, achievements, and
challenges.
Director-General of the agency, Agnes Asagbra highlighted the pivotal role modern biotechnology plays in achieving food security and the agency’s regulatory efforts to prevent harm on human health and the environment.
She called on the Committee to assist in addressing some of the challenges faced by the agency in carrying out its mandate.
Describing the agency as a formidable one in a controversial sector, Asagbra is hopeful of greater performance with the support of the legislators.
