The Peace Corps of Nigeria has debunked reports in some sections of the media, that it has appointed one Dr. Mustapha Abubakar, as the substantive Commandant-General of the Peace Corps; describing it as ridiculous and illegal.

In a statement by the Corps Public Relations Officer, Millicent Umoru-Osakwua; the security outfit called on the general public to discountenance the claim, describing it as a gimmick emanating from an impostor, who has never been a member of the Peace Corps, whose bill was even though passed by the 8th National Assembly was not assented to by President Muhammadu Buhari.

According to the statement; the bill for the establishment of the Nigerian Peace Corps is currently before the 9th National Assembly and until it is passed and assented to by President Muhammadu Buhari; it is yet to be a legal entity.

It further noted that as contained in Section 8(a) of the new Nigerian Peace Corps; the essence of the bill is to provide legal backing to the existing Peace Corps of Nigeria, under the leadership of its current Commandant-General, Dickson Akoh.

He added that when the Nigerian Peace Corps Bill is eventually passed and assented into law; it shall be headed by a National Commandant-General who shall be appointed by the President.

Until then, the statement noted that any claim to the effect that anyone has been appointed as the substantive Commandant-General is false and should be completely disregarded.
