The Minister of Women Affairs, Pauline Tallen , has blamed the poor representation of women in Nigeria’s political fabric on party politics, saying women were denied the opportunity to run for political office by many political parties during the 2019 elections.

Tallen said this on Tuesday at a panel discussion during the launch of Nigeria’s gender-based violence barometer, at the banquet hall of the Presidential Villa Abuja, in commemoation of the international women’s day.

The launch of the gender-based violence barometer is a result of collaborations between the European Union, UNICEF, the United Nations, Nigerian governors’ wives against sexual and gender-based violence and other organisations.

The gender-based violence barometer aims to name, shame and keep track of gender-based violence perpetrators across the country, as part of governments plan to combat the problem.

The messages focus on the domestication of ideas and policies, protecting women from gender based violence.

With the launch of the GBV barometer, clicking the link GBVINFO.NG, would give all Nigerians access to locations and contact details of the offenders.

Statistics reveals that 1 in 4 girls in Nigeria, has been or will be abused before the age of 18. And about 10,000 girls are abused daily in Nigeria.

Despite these figures not all the states in the country have domesticated the violence against persons act and there are only 17 sexual assault referral centers in Nigeria.

The highpoint of the event was the Presentation of awards to 6 Nigerians who won the Fighting Sexual and Gender-based Violence Storytelling film competition

Miss Aimalohi Ojeamiren a student of the University of Abuja, emerged first in the competition organised by the delegation of the European Union to Nigeria and ECOWAS.
