Benue State Government has began the demolition of illegal structures and shanties defacing Makurdi, the state capital.
Acting General Manager of the State Urban Development Board, Ternongu Mede who supervised the demolition of about 40 illegal structures says the exercise will not stop until the purpose of pulling down all the illegal structures in the city is achieved.
Make-shift shop owners along Kastina-Ala Street, the business hub of the State capital and other areas have another reason to worry following the demolition exercise with some of them mostly GSM operators saying “we are back to the streets”.
At the George Akume Way, a widow whose source of livelihood was disrupted has many questions begging for answers.including how she was going to take care of her fatherless children.
However, Mede who headed the demolition team insists that the public and all parties involved were notified before the exercise.
He futher explains that it is a continuous exercise in line with the State Government’s urban renewal plan stressing that eventually every shanty within the capital will certainly be pulled down.
It will be recalled that the exercise had commenced late last year but shortly after which those affected rebuilt the illegal structures.
