A Vasicovaginal Fistula VVF, Treatment Centre has been provided at the Gwarimpa General Hospital, Abuja, to offer psychosocial support for VVF survivors as part of the rehabilitation process in the Federal Capital Territory Abuja. The Centre was facilitated by ActionAid in partnership with the FCT Hospital Management Board.

Over the decades, VVF, has continued to task the resources of national and regional governments in developing countries including Nigeria with
over 200, 000 reported cases.

ActionAid in partnership with the FCT Hospital Management Board say efforts to remedy the rising incidences of VVF in Nigeria informed the establishment of the treatment and care centre for people living with the disease in the Nigerian capital, Abuja.

Speakers at the event, tagged, “Ending Child Marriage Project” blamed the high cases of VVF on early marriages and prolonged labour. The programme featured a presentation on the dangers of early marriage as a major cause of Vasicovaginal Fistula in Nigeria.

The 20-bed VVF treatment centre, is also designed to engage beneficiaries in skills acquisition to enable them to be economically viable and self reliant.
