The Senate says the scandalous media reports about the leaking roof of the National Assembly has given credence to an earlier request for the sum of N37 billion to renovate the building.

President of the Senate, Ahmed Lawan says the recent pictures showing the leaking roof of the national assembly has given credence to the 37 billion naira initially demanded to renovate the complex.

Senator Lawan stated this while reacting to a Point of Order raised by the Deputy Chief Whip, Aliyu Sabi, who described some of the media reports on the leaking roof as completely “misleading.”

He said at inception of the ninth Senate; himself and the Speaker of the House of Representatives , Femi Gbajabiamila conducted an on the spot assessment of the building and saw the level of dilapidation.

The Senate President further stated that it was based on their findings that the budget of N37 billion was arrived at and sent to the Presidency for necessary approval which was never approved.

According to Lawan, the Presidency rejected the amount prompting the National Assembly to reduce the renovation cost to N9bilion which is yet to be released.

Lawan, however, cautioned the media to always investigate every piece of information before rushing to the press.

He, however, said the Federal Capital Development Authority, FCDA, was directly responsible for the renovation of the National Assembly.
