14th Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II

Kano state is experiencing a tensed situation with a potential for escalation over the position of the Emir

Two royals backed by their horde of supporters took over large parts of the city, creating an uneasy situation as the state government remains undeterred with plans to re-install Emir Sanusi the second

There are allegations of federal interference as armed security operatives take control at the Emir’s palace where Sanusi is, and the guest house where Ado Bayero is.

On the 9th of March 2020 when the Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi the second was dethroned, the city of Kano was in a highly tensed state

Four years later, the same situation is playing out in the state on his return, re-appointment and plannned re-installation as the Emir

It has been a swift turn of events in the last two days following the state government’s repeal of the Emirates Council Law that broke Kano Emirates into four. The decision of the state assembly which was signed by the state governor effectively reunited Kano emirate on Thursday. Crowning the decision, was the dethronement of the four emirs, including Ado Bayero to clear the way for the installation of Emir Sanusi scheduled for Saturday

But the ousted Emir of Kano seem not ready to accept the situation. Buoyed by a court order, Ado Bayero and members of his council along with hordes of supporters lie in wait, but not at the palace.

At the palace is Emir Sanusi who was accompanied by a full complement of the Kano state government led by the governor, ABBA Yusuf to the palace.

Surrounding the palace are armed security operatives, said to be provided by the state government

The situation is tense, much like a royal rumble.

The state alleges interference by some powers at the federal level, insisting it would be resisted

But the state police command maintains that it is simply enforcing the law, in obedience to the court order stopping the reinstatement of Sanusi Lamido as emir of Kano.

The deputy governor of Kano state who doubles as the commissioner for Local government and chieftaincy affairs, Abdulsalam Gwarzo, accuses the former governor and acting national chairman of the APC, Abdullahi Ganduje of being behind the crisis

The state government wants the President, Bola Tinubu to immediately call the security chiefs to direct their men not to stand in the way of the enthronement of Emir Sanusi to prevent a descent to chaos.

What seems obvious is that Emir Sanusi still holds much influence as seen in the massive crowd of supporters that stormed the palace to welcome him
