The Benue State House of Assembly has repealed the law which made provisions for lifetime maintenance of former elected governors and their deputies in the state.
Few days to their exit, members of the previous Assembly had in May 2023,passed the controversial pension bill to extend benefits to ex-elected governors and their deputies from 1999.
However the present Assembly Monday at plenary repealed the law on grounds that it was not done in good faith.
The law had made generous provisions for the former governors and their deputies including payment of monthly stipend as basic pensions for former governors and their deputies, equivalent to the current salaries of the serving governor, from the consolidated revenue of the state.
The House also passed into law a bill to regulate the engagement of casual workers in the Benue State Public Service and purposes connected there with.
The new law forbids employers from retaining casual workers for more than two years.
A bill to prohibit harassment and extortion of money from investors, developers and businessmen in Benue State ( Popularly called Marching Ground) and a bill to provide for the retirement age and enhanced remunerations of Magistrates and Legal Officers in the State Ministry of Justice were equally passed by the State assembly.
