The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu has assured that the damage of the Commission’s facilities by flood at its Edo State headquarters in Benin City will not deter the electoral body from continuing with the ongoing Continuous Voters Registration (CVR) exercise in the State.
Professor Mahmood who said this when he paid on the spot assessment visit to INEC office in Benin City to ascertain the level of damage caused by the ravaging flood, also visited some centres where the ongoing Continuous Voters Registration exercise was taking place.
A heavy rain fall on Friday, May 24, 2024 in Benin City, had caused serious flooding at the office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) which pulled down some parts of the perimeter fence and destroyed office equipment, including some INEC Voters Enrolment Devices and furniture.
The incident had raised concerns on the possible effects on preparations for the off-season Edo State governorship election which prompted the visit of the INEC boss, Professor Mahmood Yakubu.
The mission to Edo State, was to ascertain the level of damage caused by the flood and to interact with stakeholders.
After the inspection tour, Professor Mahmood proceeded to some CVR centres in Benin metropolis like the Western Boys High School at Ikpoba Okha Local Government Area, where he promised to tackle incidents of equipment malfunction.
Mahmood Yakubu equally met with security chiefs in the State following security issues arising from the CVR exercise.
