The Akanu Ibiam International Airport and the State Secretariat were among the government institutions in Enugu State, South-East Nigeria, where Organised Labour paralysed activities, as the indefinite nationwide strike commenced on Monday.
At the airport, workers and air travellers who arrived early for morning flights were chased out by unionists who barricaded all routes leading in and out of the facility. No Airport official was available for comments.
AIT.live also observed that some civil servants who had arrived for work at the Enugu State Secretariat, uncertain about the strike, were asked to return home.
Besides government institutions, there was partial compliance from the private sector, as some commercial Banks and filling stations opened for businesses.
And government institutions in Umuahia, the Abia State capital were under lock and keys in total compliance with the nationwide industrial action declared by the Nigerian Labor Congress, NLC and Trade Union Congress, TUC on Monday.
AIT.live crew observed that other private business owners were going about their normal activities without any interference.
The industrial action is also taken its toll on commercial activities in various banks, as customers could not have access into the banking premises.
Those who spoke to AIT.live expressed reservations over the ability of the Labour unions to see to the logical conclusion of the implementation of new wage demands.
Abia State NLC Chairman, Okoro Ogbonnaya however told journalists that the strike will continue as directed by the National body.
Meanwhile, the strike declared by Organised Labour, Monday recorded the shutdown of activities at the State Secretariat, commercial banks, schools, and hospitals within Owerri, the Imo State capital.
AIT.live reports that the State Secretariat was locked, as workers gathered in groups outside the offices in compliance with the directives of Organised Labour.
It was the same scene at banks and other business centres located within the city centre where customers were seen outside the premises.
The residents are however appealing to the Federal Government to bring Labour back to negotiating table so as not to worsen the sufferings of the people occasioned by the high inflation and bad economy.
