According to TCN, the incident occurred at 10:15 pm tuesday, causing the 150MVA power transformer at Molai Substation to trip and the 330kV transmission line supplying bulk power to Maiduguri to fail. Despite repeated attempts, TCN engineers were unable to restore bulk electricity transmission.
TCN explained that Investigations revealed that the towers were brought down using an explosive device, with fragments scattered at the site. This incident affects Maiduguri and its environs.
TCN noted that towers T193, T194, and T195 were previously vandalized on December 28, 2023, using improvised explosive devices (IEDs). Two of the affected towers were rebuilt after the incident.
The company said it is currently assessing the situation to determine the best approach for temporary restoration of power supply while mobilizing a contractor to rebuild the damaged towers.
TCN urged the government and citizens to join the fight against the destruction of national assets and will continue to work with security operatives to protect its transmission towers.
