Could a Nigerian soon be going on a space mission? Well, if talks between the Nigerian Space Agency and the United States’ Space Exploration and Research Agency are anything to go by, then the answer is yes.

Both agencies have just signed a memorandum of understanding that will explore the possibility of sending a Nigerian on a space flight mission in what appears to be a major breakthrough in the Nigerian technology sector.

The partnership with the United States agency will not only foster ties between both countries but will also ensure the development of critical technologies and infrastructure especially space exploration for economic development.

The project which seeks to send at least one Nigerian to space will allow for applications from all relevant fields regardless of qualification.

The National Space Policy and Programme approved by the Executive Council of the Federation in 2001 identified human space flight as one of the three key pillars for space exploration and National development. The implementation of the 25-year road map was approved in 2005 and 2018 was scheduled for the first human space flight.

It is six years after and this may just be another opportunity to make the history which the country has yearned for in over 20 years.
