There is an outbreak of Pathogenic Avian Influenza, popularly known as bird flu in Kano State, North-West Nigeria affecting various bird species, including layers, ducks, guinea fowls, and turkeys.

The outbreak was confirmed in a statement issued by Dr. Taiwo Olasoju on behalf of the Chief Veterinary Officer of Nigeria.

Kano State veterinary offices and relevant agencies have been urged to intensify surveillance and implement strict biosecurity measures to curtail further transmission of the virus.

In addition to heightened surveillance, authorities are advocating for greater public awareness about the disease. This includes monitoring poultry populations closely to ensure early detection and swift action to address new cases.

Poultry farmers in the state are encouraged to adhere strictly to biosecurity protocols, including disinfecting poultry environments, restricting access to farms, and promptly reporting any unusual bird deaths to relevant authorities.

The government reassures stakeholders of its commitment to containing the outbreak and safeguarding both the poultry industry and public health.

It statement however says the government expressed deep concern over the increased risk of the disease spreading, especially during this season.
