The United Nations Children’s Fund, (UNICEF), has handed over health structures under the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation initiative to the Taraba State Government, as the project phases out in the state.

The project, which lasted three years, targeted a wider immunisation coverage for Taraba children, and other quality healthcare services for women and children.

The handover of the three-year Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation, (GAVI) initiative by the United Nations Children’s Fund, (UNICEF), to the Taraba State Government, was preceded by a press conference, on how the Taraba State Government plans to build on the gains of the project.

Aside from ensuring the immunisation coverage of hard-to-reach areas for Taraba children, the initiative has also championed better nutrition for children, improved access to maternal health, and adopted human resources in the state’s health sector.

UNICEF’s Chief of Bauchi Field Office, Nuzhat Rafique, said the initiative has successfully achieved 0 doses in 0 children in the state.

She also called for the incorporation of health workers under the project into the state’s civil service, among other sustainability plans.

The Executive Secretary of the Taraba State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Nuhu Tukura, said all 113 primary healthcare centres will be upgraded to grade two, which will aid the project’s sustainability plan.

Taraba State Governor Agbu Kefas, represented by the Head of Service, Ahmed Kara, received the health structures under the GAVI project, on behalf of the State Government.

Local Government Council Chairmen, as well as Monarchs, were also tasked with advocating for maternal and child health service delivery at the grassroots.
