Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara says the only way the country can pay for the devastation suffered by the Ogoni people is to provide meaningful projects and development that will help wipe away the many years of pain from oil exploration in the area

Governor Fubara said this when he played host to a delegation led by the Minister of Environment, Balarabe Lawal.

Governor Fubara who thanked President Bola Tinubu for showing genuine interest in Ogoniland also urged that the people be carried along in whatever projects the government is embarking on in the area.

The Minister said despite the initial challenge of the communities refusing to embrace the project, a number of achievements have been recorded in the Ogoni clean-up exercise.

He said successes have also been recorded in other areas, such as the provision of health facilities, water and electricity.

Accompanied by his colleague, the Minister of Regional Development, the Minister of Environment Balarabe Lawal is in Rivers State to commission a water project and inspect projects under the Hydrocarbon Pollution Restoration Project, otherwise known as HYPREP in Ogoniland.

The project seeks to remediate the soil and groundwater contamination caused by years of devastating oil spillage.
