Brain Drain: NMA expresses concern over mass exodus of Nigerian Doctors

The Nigeria medical association NMA River state chapter has expressed concerns over the brain drain in the health sector as doctors are leaving Nigeria to other countries for greener pastures.

The chairman NMA River state professor Alikor Chizindu who stated this during a chat with newsmen disclosed that over 4,500 doctors have left the shores of Nigeria to the United Kingdom.

For the past sixty-one years, the Nigerian Medical Association has contributed immensely to the growth and development of the health sector.
But one area that is giving the association cause for concern is the brain drain in the health sector.

The chairman NMA, Rivers state, Dr. Alikor Chizindu while describing the move by doctors leaving the shores of Nigeria for greener pastures as a time bomb wants Government at all levels to address the issue as soon as possible.

Though the NMA has commended the Rivers State Governor Nyesom wike for the infrastructural development in the health sector, he urged the federal government to meet the demands of the striking doctors in order to curb the brain drain in the health sector.

The 61st AGM of the Rivers State NMA will also provide an opportunity for medical doctors and stakeholders to profer Solutions to the government on how to curb the doctor’s brain drain in the country
