Some residents of the Alagbaka area of Akure, the Ondo State capital, on Monday, protested at the state business office of the Benin Electricity Distribution Company, BEDC, to lament what they termed ”crazy estimated billings”.
Armed with placards with different inscriptions, the aggrieved residents, said they are tired of extortion from the electricity provider.

They accused the BEDC of only being interested in collecting electricity bills without maintaining facilities nor providing the necessary infrastructure.
They lamented that despite buying poles and cables to provide electricity for themselves, the management of BEDC still come up with exorbitant bills, as they are made to pay between twenty and seventy thousand naira every month.
Reacting, Spokesman for the BEDC, Akure branch, Micheal Barnabas, explained that customers without meters are billed based on the feeder and tariff band they are linked to.
The Protesters, therefore, asked BEDC management to provide prepaid meters for houses in the community.
